Greater Anglia Office refurbishment of the iconic Norwich Station
In January 2023, Capel CS Ltd were successful in securing the Ipswich Station Drivers Car Park refurbishment project for Greater Anglia. The project was delivered under a Design and Build Contract (Agreement for Works of Simple Content (including Design) and was subject to a Form G (NR/L2/CIV003 issue 7) (Combined Certificate of Approval in Principle, Design and Check for Design Check Category I permanent works)
The project objective was to provide a new gravel/Permeable surface, fencing and lighting and CCTV to the staff car park at Ipswich Station in Ranelagh Road.
The remit was to provide safe and secure parking for Greater Anglia’s train drivers, while fully utilising the area to provide the maximum amount of parking spaces, including two electric vehicle chargers and future provision for electric vehicle charging. New lighting and CCTV are to be provided, supplied from a new feeder pillar and data cabinet, a new section of railing was to be replaced along the front boundary.
To develop the design pre-construction surveys included Electrical load testing, Topographic survey, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey, Civils Survey, M&E Survey, excavating trial holes to determine the ground make up, Asbestos survey, CBR Testing and WAC testing.
The Asbestos survey, CBR and WAC test reports identified that further assessments would be required to stabilise the ground and how hazardous waste would be removed off site, Capel CS engaged one of their specialist suppliers to supply the additional fill material and remove the hazardous waste, this allowed delivery lorries to arrive on site full and leave site full, saving time, cost and reducing the volume of traffic accessing the site, by reducing the amount of vehicle movements this helped reduce emissions around the site.
The works commenced early March 2023, where the enabling works included removing the existing light columns and reducing the ground down to formation. A network of below ground ducting was installed, concrete bases were constructed in preparation for the new light columns, CCTV, EV chargers and feeder pillar. A new kerb line was installed around the perimeter of the site, with fill material being imported, laid to the revised levels and compacted ready to receive the permeable tarmac surfacing. On completion, line marking was applied to demark the parking spaces. Electrical and CCTV installations were completed, tested and commissioned and the facility handed back to Greater Anglia in June 2023.
